In “Mental Toughness for Leaders”, Claudio Chiste has come up with another gem. In his earlier book, “Rise of the Warrior Leader”, Chiste explored how to “Own who you are. Own the mission. Own the result” as a warrior leader. In this latest instalment, Chiste delves into the unpredictable terrain of warrior-like mental toughness. He serves us a full menu on fundamentals of mental toughness and takes us on an adventure on how to mentally empower yourself to adapt and excel despite encountering adversity. This book is not just packed with nuggets of practical wisdom on mental resilience; it is also a gift in itself for any and every modern leader seeking ways to become mentally tough and to thrive in spite of the challenges confronting them. This is a powerful resource not just for leadership. It is a powerful guide for every human being searching for ways to become mentally resilient especially in the fast-paced digital world we find ourselves in globally. Do not be fooled by the title and think that it is all about the mind and mental toughness alone. The book takes the whole person as whole and explores other areas of human capability from the Japanese Ikigai to the SPEAR Model. Read it to find out more. Read it with a pen and a notebook.

I have been a lecturer, consultant and coach in leadership skills for over 20 years and as a professional and proud South African, I am excited and delighted to endorse Claudio Chiste’s contribution to the field. The writing has an easy-going accessible style, yet is authoritative in its understanding of human nature and the thorough range of skills and models that invite the reader to self-reflect, to build strengths through owning vulnerability.
Most notable are the examples and dynamic stories of courageous leadership that includes the wisdom and strengths of South African heroes among others, examples that range across cultures and shine a light on the balance of tactical intelligence and emotional intelligence necessary for leadership success.
The central model and metaphor which unfolds in rich detail throughout the chapters of the book is that of the SPEAR, each letter forming the key word in the title and focus of each chapter, starting with Self-awareness. In our age of increasing complexity and uncertain stability, perhaps nothing could be more important than the humanity, emotional intelligence and practised tactical skill of mindful warrior leader.
I cannot think of better advice for aspiring and present leaders and coaches of leaders – read this book.

Review by Pikashi Deka

“Self-acceptance is the cornerstone of mental toughness, yet it’s only achieved through self-awareness—a deep insight into your thoughts, emotions, and reactions.”
Setbacks in life are inevitable. Yet, they come in various shapes and sizes. In Chiste’s work, the focus shifts from what happens to how one responds. While the central core of the book is undoubtedly to create resilience through the SPEAR model, there is arguably a greater goal: to create a level of self-awareness that can pave the path to embracing discomfort and becoming cognizant of the dispositions and attributes that steer one away from alignment with their calling or purpose. The “R” in SPEAR, signifying results, is predicated on the letters before it, driving home an understanding of following the path, managing emotions, and placing full attention on the present moment.
What makes Chiste’s book such a compelling text on self-awareness is both its universal relatability and its impeccable introspection, helping audiences identify their Achilles heel and understand what makes them tick at a deeper, subconscious level. Chiste seamlessly weaves one’s environment with their highest, transcendental self through diagrams that chart the path to taking accountability and becoming “champions of our own life.” Digging deeper, the work zeroes in on resilience through a simple logic flow that implies that one only loses or fails when one stops trying.
This work is loaded with countless tools, such as the “Something to Ponder” section, which is filled with interesting tidbits like brain speed. Moreover, the flow and well-balanced use of Venn diagrams and charts to appeal to the visual learner work wonders in helping individuals understand the key premise of cognitive restructuring. Overall, Chiste is an absolute wizard at taking commonly known terms like “peak performance” and “elite level” and dissecting them for all to understand. With the help of the author’s book, even the weakest leader may learn to achieve warrior status.

Review by Mirah Shah

Mental Toughness for Leaders is a deep and thoughtful guide on building inner strength and resilience, all wrapped in a clear framework called the SPEAR model—Self-awareness, Path to vision, Emotion regulation, Attention management, and Result visualization. Through stories of warriors, psychological research, historical accounts, and hard-earned lessons, Author Claudio Chistè gives readers practical tools to face adversity head-on, whether in leadership or life itself. He weaves wisdom from Carl Jung, Viktor Frankl, and even Maqoma, a Xhosa military leader, to drive home the idea that we all have a warrior within, one that must be awakened, shaped, and harnessed through disciplined reflection and emotional control.
From a soldier’s lens, this book resonated with me. The chapter on self-awareness struck me like a rifle butt to the chest. Chistè dives into the psychological landscape with surgical precision, showing how our thoughts and beliefs shape our reality. That part where he talks about sealing your mental container, avoiding “leaks” that drain your emotional and spiritual energy, that’s something I wish I’d known back in Afghanistan. We’d lose good men not to bullets, but to the weight they carried inside. That metaphor of “leakage” explained so much about burnout and disengagement in high-stress teams. He also digs into identity through stories like that of Maqoma, showing how setbacks don’t define us, it’s what we do after that matters.
The SPEAR model itself is strong. Each letter isn’t just theory, it’s backed with real-life stories and reflective exercises. The section on emotion regulation, chapter three, reminded me of my first leadership role under fire. You don’t learn to manage fear; you learn to act through it. Chistè echoes that, but adds a crucial layer: understanding the emotional roots behind our triggers. Too often, we glorify stoicism and call it strength, when in reality, we’re just shutting down. As he says, don’t mistake petrifaction for resilience. That line alone should be on every leader’s wall.
This book is for those who’ve stared down tough moments, whether in combat, business, or personal crisis, and wondered how to bounce back stronger. I’d recommend it to junior leaders in the military, seasoned executives feeling stuck, and anyone struggling to align their identity with their purpose. It’s not just about pushing through pain, it’s about knowing who you are, what you want, and having the tools to stay focused when everything around you is chaos. Mental Toughness for Leaders doesn’t just hand you a sword, it teaches you how to wield it.

Review by Thomas Anderson the Editor-in-Chief

Leadership is a courageous act of selflessly guiding others to achieve set objectives and goals. Only visionary leaders with great attributes are able to guide, motivate, ensure high morale and build character in others. Visionary leaders must be mentally tough to be able to guide in times of adversity. Only through this act, will be respected by those they serve. This book is about resilience and the ability to lead for the purpose of ensuring organisational effectiveness and efficiency more importantly, self-awareness and self-acceptance.

Claudio underscored critical concepts of leadership, mental toughness and resilience using the SPEAR Model. The model is a powerful tool in ensuring that these concepts are not underestimated if we are serious about realising our dreams. Subordinates willingness to take instructions (marching orders in the military) is exceedingly critical towards their success. I admire Claudio’s tenacity to have tackled and produced such incredible and remarkable piece of academic work. Am sure in producing this exciting work, he had to navigate through rough and stormy seas.

Retirement allows leaders to reflect on their careers. As a combat pilot, I am accustomed to critical reflections or debriefings after each mission, as that is when learning occurs. Claudio’s “Mental Toughness for Leaders” provides a consistent stream of bite-sized, practical learning content designed to assist leaders in navigating both the smooth and turbulent phases of their tenure. Turbulent phases could include being under fire as a combat pilot, where trust among formation members typically ensures survival. Conversely, the opposite occurs when individuals with other agendas attempt to derail your well-meaning actions. In the introduction, Claudio already advises: “Choosing battles wisely and avoiding unwinnable ones is crucial.”
Through the SPEAR model, Claudio guides learning leaders in their quest for improvement. The narrative is richly embroidered with quotes from leaders and intellectuals. Empirical studies provide ample proof that enables the author to make numerous deductions, substantiating his unique approach to leadership. I am excited to endorse this book and recommend it to any aspiring leader; I certainly needed it when I faced challenges in leadership.

Claudio Chiste has written an insightful overview of leadership under tough conditions, which he believes we are certainly in at the moment.
He draws on local and other histories in business, warfare and sport, and has put together a comprehensive set of frameworks and questions for all those who aspire to the mental toughness he believes is necessary in order to lead. I commend him greatly for taking these steps and sharing his own experiences and many other sources, into a tightly written set of insights and framework that will directly help those who wish to make a difference do so.
I strongly recommend those who wish to reflect on their leadership and take the journey of self-discovery to engage with this material.

Claudio Chiste has written an inspirational book. The first words that come to mind are authenticity, passion and integrity. It is inspirational in the precise meaning of the word: “fill with the urge or ability to do something…particularly something creative.”
The book is not only a highly practical and user-friendly manual on leadership. It also provides a roadmap to greater self-development through self-awareness and self-belief in our intrinsic identity. It is clear on every page that Claudio has walked – and is walking – the talk.
He is sharing his personal experience in the military, in international banking and in his journey through the challenges of life. It is the strength of this vision – and total focus on its attainment – which inform his passion for sharing his home-grown formula and practice. We cannot all reach the heights of leadership attained by Nelson Mandela or Siya Kolisi or emulate the strategic dexterity of Zulu King Shaka or Chief Jongumsobomvu Maqoma, leader of the Xhosa armed forces, who grew stronger by learning from defeat.
But by following the practical steps outlined in this manual for self-control and self-development we can unleash the forces which led such great leaders to transform adversity into triumph.
The book is impeccably researched and interspersed with historical and contemporary examples of leadership. Claudio relies on an astonishing array of leading thinkers including Carl Jung, Viktor Frankl and Plato in affirmation of the underlying universality of his core message: the power of self-belief. He advocates a constant analysis of performance against a checklist of core values as the basis for transformation and empowerment.
The importance of emotion, mindfulness and constant revisualisation of the end-goal provide the steadfastness needed to maintain a constant process of renewal.
The inventive SPEAR model provides the means of remaining on target and keeping the three C’s firmly in the sights: commitment, challenge and control.
I particularly liked the six concentric circles leading from identity to self-awareness through ambition, values with constant reality checks on strengths and weaknesses.
Claudio advocates taking calculated risks to discover and strengthen our reserves of courage insight and resilience. “Never give up but have the self-awareness to adapt to changing circumstances, he says. ”
As the late Nelson Mandela said to me in an interview published in the Christian Science Monitor after he stepped down as President in 1999:
“If you have an objective in life then you want to concentrate on that and not get involved in infighting with your enemies. You want to create an atmosphere where you can move everyone towards the goal you have set for yourself. ”
It takes visionary leaders to inspire high morale and empower others. “Its about aligning your identity with your purpose » Claudio said.
As stated simply in the Zulu proverb : “A person creates their own identity.”

With the complexity of issues facing humanity and our planet in the 21st century, our theories and frameworks of leadership and change very often focus on the demonstration and practice of leadership and less so on the journey and personal growth, hardships and crucible moments that would leaders and build the disciplines such as mental toughness that the author describes. Drawing on examples from business, sport, politics and the military, the author expertly discusses the SPEAR framework of how all humans can develop and grow their mental toughness. I am reminded by the ancient Samurai mantra of: “The more alive one is, the harder one is to kill”. This book illustrates this form of “being alive” when leaders align their purpose or calling with a set of actions and are willing to step into uncertain situations, often in harm’s way to the betterment of others.

This is an excellent book which is original in its themes and perspectives, and well-researched. Although it addresses the trials and tribulations of today’s modern society, it draws upon a long tradition of inquiry into what drives individuals to become leaders and how, fundamental to the process, is a search within to identify the unique strengths and resilience which form the human character.
The book is highly accessible and easy to navigate in terms of its themes and direction of travel as manifested in chapters which identify those qualities which constitute the Warrior Leader. There are visual illustrations throughout, the majority of which have been designed by the author to manifest and encapsulate what are at times complex concepts. Quotations from highly diverse renowned experts in the fields of psychology and philosophy and mental resilience, from Einstein to Jung to Sun Tzu, reinforce ideas and arguments made throughout the book, whilst at the same time anchoring it within established conceptual frameworks. Throughout the work there are practical exercises for readers, as well as issues to ponder; these keep the text lively and engaging, whilst at the same time encouraging self-reflection.
The book takes the reader through methodologies for improving self-awareness and through this, greater ability to manage detail, emotions, and environment. The work ultimately provides a practical guide, a road map if you will, for the individual who aspires to excel in business, management, and leadership. Through reference to the SPEAR model in the early chapters, the author firmly locates the subject-matter in the proud tradition of Zulu warrior culture, advocating its relevance to leadership roles in today’s highly competitive workplace environment.
This book is an excellent contribution to general management literature. It should certainly be on the bookshelves of all who aspire to achieve self-awareness of their unique qualities, and then combine these with the traditions and mindset of the warrior leader, to achieve the very best of which they are capable in both their private and professional lives.

I approached the reading of this book through the lens of a former school Principal. In my opinion, the ability to fight back when the world seems against you is right up there with the most important attributes which a school should be inculcating into its pupils. Motivational speakers often say that the greatest gift you can give your child is the gift of hunger. In my experience, over-protecting children from the harsh realities of the world ultimately hinders the development of resilience and self-motivation.
True character is not forged in comfort, but it is through struggle that resilience is developed which, in turn, leads to personal fulfilment. This is the message which lies at the heart of Mental Toughness of a Warrior – a powerful reminder that mental strength is not innate, but developed through facing adversity head-on.

“Mental Toughness for Leaders” is one of those rare books that manages to be intellectually rich, deeply personal, and eminently practical all at once. Claudio’s SPEAR model – beginning with Self-awareness and culminating in Result – offers not only a structured framework for mental resilience but a deeply human guide for navigating today’s challenges with clarity, courage, and compassion. This is not a book of empty motivation; it is research-backed, culturally grounded, and filled with powerful metaphors, case studies, and historical insight. Whether referencing Carl Jung or Xhosa warriors, Claudio weaves timeless principles with modern relevance. It’s a book I found myself returning to, pen in hand, not just for leadership lessons, but for life.”
I’ve had the privilege of knowing Claudio both professionally and personally, and what strikes me most is that he lives what he writes. He brings calm strength into every room, whether on stage or in conversation. His ability to hold space, challenge gently, and uplift purposefully makes him not only a thought leader, but a rare kind of leader – the kind who walks alongside others while helping them access the warrior within. I am proud to know Claudio and even prouder to recommend his work.

Claudio is doing truly remarkable work, not only genuine and insightful, but also impactful. He has a natural gift for teaching the youth to appreciate our country and its rich heritage. His deep love and respect for our culture shines through in his writing, and his relentless drive to uncover and present the facts with integrity is inspiring.

Claudio’s mental toughness book is a powerful resource, not just for excelling in the sports arena but also for navigating life’s challenges. What sets the SPEAR model apart is its unique emphasis on starting with self-awareness and self-acceptance, before defining your vision. A standout concept for me is the WANT Factor, which measures how deeply you desire your vision. The stronger this factor, the greater your commitment is likely to be, especially during tough times.
